Getting Good Photos of the Moon
May 15, 2020
So you gear up and get out there, take the shot and get back to the computer to see an orange blob. That's what usually happens to me. But never say die.
Last week there was a Super Moon predicted. So Connie and I drove about an hour to the other side of the Mackinac Bridge to get the shot.
We set up on the Lake Michigan side of the bridge looking east to the Lake Huron side. That's where the Photographer's Ephemeris said the moon should rise. The PE is an app that you can use to see where in the sky the sun/moon will rise/set anywhere in the world. We got there about 8:30 to set up. Sunset was 8:55 and moon rise was 9:25. Clear skies, the only hitch was the winds were blowing over 30 mph. Hard to keep the camera steady through that , but we were there to get the shot.
Except for it being a little fuzzy (chalk that up to operator error in focusing and a little bit due to the wind howling), the shot was decent. It's better than I've done before. I owe that to a video I watched before going out.
This video is from a photographer at Photography Academy. It helped me quite a bit. Here's a link to it if you want to take a look. If you are going to "shoot the moon" it's well worth it. Click here
Short on verbiage this week so you have time to watch the video. It's about 10 min.
Until next week, take care and God bless.
